In addition to the $20,000 basic life insurance policy offered at no cost to WESD employees by Washington Elementary School District, employees have the opportunity to purchase supplemental life insurance coverage. Employees do not need to be enrolled in a medical plan in order to purchase supplemental life insurance, but they do need to be enrolled in basic life insurance (a medical plan or the wavier option).

- For yourself: An amount between $10,000 and $500,000 in increments of $10,000. Guaranteed issue amount of $100,000 applies to newly hired employees only.
- For your spouse: An amount between $5,000 and $250,000, in increments of $5,000. Spouse Optional Life coverage may not exceed 50% of the employee’s coverage. Guaranteed issue amount of $50,000 applies to spouses of newly hired employees only.
- For your dependent child(ren):You may purchase $5,000 ($500 for birth – 6 months) or $10,000 ($1,000 for birth – 6 months) for each child up to age 19 and dependent on parent(s) for 50% of their support).
Class 2 Employees (administrative employees)
- For yourself: An amount equal to 1, 2, 3 or 4 times your basic annual earnings up to $500,000. Guaranteed issue amount of $100,000 applies to newly hired employees only.
- For most plans, “basic annual earnings” is defined as your salary. Basic annual earnings excludes bonuses, commissions or overtime. Please see your benefits booklet or check with Payroll for the exact definition of earnings that applies to you.
- For your spouse: An amount between $5,000 and $250,000, in increments of $5,000. Maximum spouse coverage is 50% of the employee’s supplemental life coverage. Guaranteed issue amount of $50,000 applies to spouses of newly hired employees only.
- For your dependent child(ren): You may purchase $5,000 ($500 for birth – 6 months) or $10,000 ($1,000 for birth – 6 months) for each child up to age 19 years old dependent on parent(s) for 50% of their support).
All Employees
- Guaranteed issue amounts are only guaranteed for elections made within the 31 days of original hire date.
- Your supplemental insurance plan is portable at the end of employment with WESD if under the age of 70.
- Please use the Life Insurance Calculator on ESS to verify your rates as they may change based on current age.
- You must elect supplementary life coverage for yourself in order to elect coverage for your spouse
and/or children. - New enrollment requires completion of a Symetra enrollment form which is on the ESS site.
- Employees and spouses who both work for the District cannot purchase additional spouse coverage on each other. In addition, only one spouse may purchase coverage on the dependent children.
- Evidence of Insurability (EOI) is required if enrolling in supplemental life insurance for the first time during an Open Enrollment period or increasing the current benefit amount. Employees requiring EOI for their 21-22 elec-tions will be notified directly by Symetra. Failure to complete the EOI within the allowed time frame will cancel your new or increased supplemental life election for the school year. EOI’s are not required to continue with the current election amount.
