    Coverage Details

Benefits begin on the 15th day of disability and continue for a maximum of 26 weeks. The benefit applies to medical ailments that occur outside of the workplace and leave the employee unable to perform the regular functions of his or her job. Your benefit amount will be determined by the amount you selected during enrollment, not to exceed 66 2/3% of your salary. Payment of benefits will come directly from Symetra and be mailed to your home address on file with the District. Short-term disability premiums are paid as a post-tax deduction, so the weekly benefit is not taxed.

First-time Enrollees: The 12-month preexisting condition exclusion will apply for those employees who are signing up for the first time. This means that if you have been previously diagnosed, treated for, received medical advice on or received care for an illness or injury prior to July 1 of a plan year, this illness/injury would be considered preexisting and no benefit would be paid. For example, if an employee was pregnant as of July 1, 2021 and enrolled in STD for the first time during this enrollment, the pregnancy may be considered a preexisting condition and no benefit would be paid.

During Open Enrollment, employees electing short-term disability for the first time, or increasing their election amount are subject to evidence of insurability. The District short-term disability benefit is administered by Symetra.
