governing board membership   governing board members are unpaid, elected officials who serve as the policy-making body for the washington elementary school district. a board member must be a qualified elector and have lived in the district at least one year. each member serves a four-year term. terms are staggered so two or three board seats become vacant on alternate election years. according to arizona law, board members may serve for an unlimited number of terms. board responsibilities   the washington school district governing board is responsible to the citizens of the district and the state of arizona for the education of public school students in the state's largest elementary school district. the board sets policy, approves educational programs and textbook adoption, approves the hiring and termination of personnel, sets salaries and compensates and adopts a yearly budget. the responsibility to oversee and administer programs and policies rests with the superintendent, who is hired by the board. board action   the advice of the public is given careful consideration before action is taken on any item. the board's first concern is for the educational program as it affects students. final decisions may depart from the advice of the public when, in the judgment of the board and the staff, such advice is not consistent with district goals, current educational practice or within reach of available financial resources. board meetings   regular meetings of the governing board are held on the second and fourth thursday of each month, with some exceptions as noted on the calendar. meetings are held at the administrative center, 4650 west sweetwater avenue and begin at 7:00 p.m. the governing board may call for special meetings as needed. viewing the agenda   copies of the upcoming agenda are sent to each washington district school and posted on the district web site for public review before each meeting. the agenda may also be

  • Home New Beginnings Academy

program overview it is the goal of the new beginnings academy (nba) to establish a creative and caring environment for students to successfully learn in a school setting. the fundamental philosophy of the nba program is that each student is a unique individual with unique personal, social, behavioral and educational needs. as a result, every disciplinary situation becomes unique in nature. consequences for misbehavior provide the best learning value when matched to the unique student and unique situation. the likelihood for children learning from their mistakes increases dramatically when children see a reasonable connection between their behavior and the resulting consequences.  the nba staff dedicates itself to following a set of core beliefs that provides a guide for dealing with student discipline. these core beliefs guide our attempts to individualize disciplinary procedures and to help students perceive reasonable connections between their behavior and the resulting consequences.   the core beliefs provide the guiding light for our professional decisions. the staff encourages parents and students to bring concerns and questions to us in the event that we operate in a manner that appears to be inconsistent with the core beliefs.  criteria for placement  the program will focus on students in grades six through eight who have violated the wesd student code of conduct agreement at their home school. students referred to new beginnings academy have been recommended for long-term suspension or expulsion.  students who are receiving special education services may be considered for referral to new beginnings academy, provided the iep team is in agreement with the placement. students in the program who are evaluated and found to be eligible for special education services may continue in the program as deemed appropriate by the iep team. faculty and staff the new beginnings academy
