The Curriculum Department facilitates the development and implementation of all District curricula in alignment with Arizona Academic Standards in mathematics, language arts, social studies, science, music, art, physical education, and technology. All curricula are reviewed and developed as part of a collaborative process through the Planning and Steering Council. Since the process began, hundreds of WESD staff and community members have contributed to the ongoing curricular renewal.
In addition, the Curriculum Department facilitates the selection of instructional materials following an adoption cycle. An adoption committee comprised of teachers and parents through the Planning and Steering Council, reviews the curriculum, analyzes the alignment of the materials on display, and evaluates the materials presented by vendors according to a number of criteria. In addition, teachers and parents are invited to review all materials on display. All evaluations are reviewed and a recommendation to adopt specific materials is brought to the Governing Board.
The Curriculum Department, in conjunction with Professional Development, facilitates the implementation of newly adopted materials through training provided for teachers on the use of the core and ancillary instructional materials.
