WESD Social Worker Named School Social Worker of the Year

Social worker Emma Sanchez of Washington Elementary School has been named the 2021 School Social Worker of the Year by the School Social Work Association of Arizona.

“Emma Sanchez exemplifies what a school social worker should be. Caring, knowledgeable, understanding and flexible,” said Dorothy Watkins, director of WESD Social Services.  “Students and parents feel safe with Emma. They are willing to share their issues and work with her to meet their needs. Her encouragement helps everyone she comes in contact with to understand and reach their potential. She has also found thousands of dollars in donations and has been a key part of keeping parent volunteers at her school.”

Watkins and Washington Elementary School Principal Jennifer Griggs nominated Emma for her many outstanding contributions to her school and the field of school social work as a whole. She will be formally recognized at a virtual awards ceremony on March 5.  Emma is the second WESD social worker in three years to receive this honor. Donna Denial, lead social worker, received the award in 2018. The WESD is incredibly fortunate have an amazing team of social workers and is truly proud of Emma’s contributions.
