WESD Receives $27,000 in Donations from North Phoenix Kiwanis

North Phoenix Kiwanis has been a valued partner of the WESD for many years and has positively impacted WESD students and the community. North Phoenix Kiwanis has provided holiday support including food and gifts to WESD families, donated dictionaries to every third grade student for over 10 years, supported the McKinney-Vento Program with hotel and transportation donations, donated funds to develop a soccer field and purchase bleachers and provided Positive Behavior Supports Intervention incentives at schools.

This year, North Phoenix Kiwanis had the opportunity to provide help in a new way. Jim Days, president, understands the importance of arts education and how it allows students to use their knowledge creatively in the classroom. “Taking music instruments and repairing them so that students can use them made a lot of sense,” Days said. The North Phoenix Kiwanis Club generously donated $19,549.55 to refurbish musical instruments and cases. This donation will help every child in the WESD have access to an instrument as part of a new WESD music initiative. Samantha Chariker, coordinator of special areas for the WESD stated, “This generous donation has completed the district's new applied music initiative, ensuring ALL WESD K-6 students have the opportunity to learn to play the violin, trumpet, trombone, flute and much more. It also ensures that our middle schools will have access to higher functioning instruments.

“Now the students will have more instruments that work well and the needed supplies to properly care for the instruments.  Without the generosity of this organization, our students would not be able to experience music education in such a diverse and accessible manner.  We are grateful and look forward to putting this donation into action!”

North Phoenix Kiwanis also donated $8,250 for new library books and furniture at Washington Elementary, Maryland School and Palo Verde Middle School. Dr. Jason McIntosh, the Gifted Administrator for Gifted Services stated, “The Library Media Specialists at Maryland, Palo Verde, and Washington Schools are thrilled to receive a Reading Oasis as a result of the hard work of our local Kiwanis club. This donation will help countless students over the next several years discover adventure, excitement, and knowledge within the pages of a book. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

These donations have greatly impacted the WESD and will help students be even more successful.
