New Governing Board Member Takes Oath of Office


This morning, Nikkie Whaley was sworn in to a two-year term on the WESD Governing Board. Ms. Whaley was one of 13 who applied to fill the seat vacated by Clorinda Graziano, who passed away in December, 2016. She was appointed to fill the vacancy by Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson, who administered the oath at his office.
Ms. Whaley is a proud mother of two WESD students. She has been a classroom volunteer and a member of both the Acacia Elementary School PTA and Site Council. Ms. Whaley has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco. She has more than 15 years of experience working with youth and families in the areas of behavioral health and education.  Ms. Whaley is a graduate of Valle del Sol’s  2012 Hispanic Leadership Institute and a former Board Member for  One n Ten, an organization that serves as a resource and support to LGBT youth. Currently, she is a singing member of the Phoenix Women’s Chorus and an active member of Diversity Leadership Alliance, a diversity education organization, in Arizona.
