The WESD family welcomed five new members to the Transportation Department in early July. These particular additions have wheels instead of legs, but their impact to the Department and the District is already paying off.
Five used Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses were purchased to serve as “parts” buses for the existing fleet at approximately $1,000 each. Since acquiring the units, Transportation has replaced the engine of one of its operating CNG buses, saving the District between $25,000 and $30,000. That particular John Deere engine has less than 40,000 miles on it.
“We just want to be fiscally responsible,” said Bert Herzog, director of Transportation. “We have taken what other districts have thrown away and have been able to put it to good use, prolonging the life of our buses and therefore saving the District thousands and thousands of dollars.”
