Arts, Music & P.E.
The WESD offers a robust set of “special area” programs for elementary students (K-6) as well as K-8 and middle school students including art, music and P.E. These are not peripheral add-ons, but structured programs with clear expectations (e.g., instrument playing and signing in music, weekly lessons in each area, integration of fine arts in early years).
Art
For kindergarten through sixth grade: art is included as a special area (alongside music and P.E.). Seventh and eighth grade students choose electives that may include: 3D art, advanced art, mixed media art or general art.
Art is treated as a full subject (not just occasional “art project” time) across elementary grades, with dedicated instruction.
Music
At K-6 schools, all students receive art, music and P.E. Students in fifth and sixth grade participate in an Applied Music model studying various instruments including woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion and voice. There are four elementary schools offering Band and Orchestra. The core values are: achievement through musical literacy, performance and skills, respect, integrity and responsibility, equal education opportunity and inclusivity, health, safety and welfare of students.
At K-8 schools, all students receive art, music and P.E. Students can choose to join band or orchestra in fifth grade and continue to study through eighth grade.
The middle schools offer the traditional choir, band and orchestra programs with other specialties that may be offered such as: Drumline, Bucket Drumming, Vocal Ensemble and Theater. All of these courses provide performance opportunities both at the schools and often in the community.
Physical Education
P.E. is offered for Kindergarten through eighth grade ensuring students are equipped with physical literacy. The core values are: Physical health and safety, equity and inclusivity, holistic development, character and responsibility and integration and lifelong wellness.
